Central Drugs Standard Control Organization & DGCI

CDSCO is a regulatory body for pharma drugs and medical devices. It is based with HQ in New Delhi. It is under the aegis of Directorate General of Health Services that is under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in India. CDSCO overseas various norm related to drug manufacture in India. It is responsible for monitoring quality, safety and efficacy of formulations vis a vis human health. It also regulates and monitirs ,import of drugs.

The active regulatory body is the Drug Controller General of India which is under the purview of CDSCO the parent body. There are other advisory bodies to the DCGI:

1) Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB)

2) Drug Consultative Committee (DCC).

3) Central Licensing Approval Authority (CLAA).

The above bodies perform various functions related to the agenda of CDSCO. The CDSCO also imparts training, offers guidance and works with World Health Organization to promote GMP or Good Manufacturing Practices. It plays a vital role in clinical research and trials in India.

CDSCO also publishes Indian Pharmacopoeia besides estabilishing contemporary regulatory measures, new acts and rules.
